Spun Candy love to go above and beyond for holidays and celebrations, we just can’t help it. It’s not just all the sugar we go through every day that makes us sweet. And, as self-proclaimed experts of all things gifting, we thought we’d give you the down low for this Mothering Sunday, so you can get excited too!
Read more to find out a brief history, discover how our Middle Eastern friends will be celebrating the tradition and some fun ideas to mix it up this March.
You may have heard the myth that all holidays are just a sneaky marketing manoeuvre created by card companies. …Well it’s safe to say they do benefit from the tradition, but Mothering Sunday allegedly started a whopping 500 years ago. (Now, that’s a lot of afternoon teas).
It is believed on that date, families were to visit their nearest ‘Mother Church’ – the Church they were baptised in. This also marks the one day a year that maids and servants were allowed to visit their families. British Mothering Sunday was then influenced by the American traditions and transformed it into a holiday of appreciating our Mothers. How sweet!
Today, Britain celebrates all the hard work our Mothers, Step Mum’s and Grannies do on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
Middle Eastern Mother Madness
Our Middle Eastern friends and franchises in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Oman, can celebrate Mother’s Day up to three times a year! The diverse culture in the UAE means they can adopt the UK, USA and their own date for the occasion.
Mother’s Day Must Do’s
- Firstly, sending a personalised card is a Mothering Sunday must. As Spun Candy love to be creative, we’d definitely recommend hand making your card, to ensure its extra special. Check out Pinterest if you’re stuck for ideas. Alternatively, if you aren’t so good with arts & crafts then online card shops like our latest stockist, MoonPig are just as great.
- Give her something simple and sweet. Okay, so we may be a bit bias here, but our jars of Love Mix hard rock candy and bags of confectionery, do make perfect gifts. We’d suggest a bunch of flowers, but then again we do make beautiful candy roses. Our next best alternatives to a sugary fix includes anything artistic… a photo album, scrap book or hand-crafted home decorations.
- Enjoy a day out! There are many days to spend indoors, the celebration of Motherhood shouldn’t be one of them. Based in the heart of London, we know first-hand how many cool and unique activities you can get up to. Candy Making Masterclasses in Spitalfields is just one of them. We have some great bars and restaurants surrounding us!
- Mother’s Day is about treating the special lady in your life, so whatever you do, make sure it’s fun. We’d love to know if you have any other ideas to make the day extra great… leave a comment below, FB or Tweet us.
